2.10    Selection Policy

It shall be the policy of the Fire Department to recruit and select the most qualified persons for positions in the Fire Department.  Recruitment and selection shall be conducted in a manner to insure open competition, provide equal employment opportunity, and to prohibit discrimination.

 

2.20    Equal Employment Opportunity

The Oxford Fire Department is an equal opportunity employer.  Employment selections, promotions, compensation, fringe benefits, Fire Department-sponsored training, education, disciplinary actions, and other employment related decisions shall be made without regard to race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, disability, age, sexual orientation, or any other reason prohibited by local, State, or Federal law or unrelated to one’s ability to perform a given job.

2.40    Hiring Policy

INTENT:          TO STANDARDIZE THE PRACTICE AND CRITERIA FOR HIRING OF FIRE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL, IN A FAIR AND EQUITABLE MANNER, AND TO GUARANTEE THAT THE MOST QUALIFIED CANDIDATES ARE HIRED BY THIS AGENCY.  THE FIRE CHIEF SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RECRUITMENT OF ALL FIRE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THIS POLICY, FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL LAWS.

 

I.          APPLICANT REVIEW & BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION

A. Only fully completed applications shall be accepted.                                                                                                                                                                            

B.        The Fire Chief, or a designate shall review all applications received  

         by the Department and conduct background record checks include:

                 1.   Criminal Record Check

                 2.   Driving Record Check

                 3.   Contact with prior employers and non-family references

                 4.   Only applicants that have successfully passed the background                           

                       investigation and have maintained a good driving record shall be 

                       considered for employment.

       5.  Applicants must have a high school diploma or    

                       equivalent to be   eligible for employment

6.      Applicants selected for Candidate status shall be notified by     

 phone or mail of the location, date and time for further screening 

 or testing.

 

II.          PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST

All applicants for EMS Coordinator/EMS I.C. positions shall be required to satisfactorily complete a recognized physical agility test, prescribed by the Oxford Fire Department, to be eligible for employment.

 

III.         INTERVIEW

An Oral Interview shall be conducted by the Fire Chief or designate(s)

           A.  Purpose:

                1.  Inform candidates about Fire Department operations

                2.  Detail expected duties of the job and the commitment required

3.  Answer any questions the applicant may have concerning the   

                     job opening

          B. Applicants to be considered shall be advised of the date, time and  

              location of the oral interview.

 

IV.        CONDITIONAL OFFER OF PROBATIONARY EMPLOYMENT  

Contingent upon satisfactory completion of a Physical Examination as outlined in Section B, below, Candidates will be offered the following Conditional Offer of Probationary Employment:      

 

 

A.   PROBATIONARY PERIOD

1.      All applicants hired by the Oxford Fire Department as    

      Firefighter/Emergency Medical Providers shall be considered “At    

      Will” Probationary Employees, subject to discharge with or without   

      cause or notice.

2.      New employees having previously been members of a Fire Department in the State of Michigan and having left that department in good standing shall be required to complete a minimum of six months probation.

 

B.   PHYSICAL EXAMINATION

      1.  A Physical Examination, including Drug Screen, shall be completed 

           and passed by all applicants considered for employment.

2.      Physical Examinations for all Firefighter/Emergency Medical  

      Providers shall meet the requirements of the Michigan Fire Fighters  

      Training Council

3.      Shall be completed at a facility specified by the Fire Chief.

 

2.50    Persons with Disability

It is the policy of the Oxford Fire Department not to engage in discriminatory practices in regard to hiring.  Denials of employment as a result of the findings of a pre-employment physical examination shall be based upon the assessment that the physical problem discovered during the examination poses an unacceptable risk to the health of the prospective employee, causes inability of the prospective employee to adequately perform the job duties of the position for which applied even if reasonable necessary aids are provided by the Department, and creates unacceptable potential liability to the Oxford Fire Department as the employer.

 

If, upon receipt of the results of a Pre-Employment Physical Examination, the perspective employee is hired, then a copy of the physical examination report shall be placed in the employee’s permanent personnel file.
